The Real Struggles of Implementing Information Systems
Hi Guys, welcome back! Todays post is all about the struggles businesses face when implementing information systems.
Technology in today’s society plays a vital role in businesses. Information systems are the tools used by businesses to collect, manage, and analyse data. Some systems include Transaction Processing [TPS], Management Information [MIS] and Decision Support [DSS]. Common struggles of implementing information systems include:
1. Insufficient software training tools.
In order
for information systems implementations to be successful businesses must
provide their employees with the continuous training necessary. The systems are
pointless if staff are unable to use them. Training should demonstrate how to
use features and how core processes are carried out with confidence. The value
of this software along with the responsibilities and expectations should be
communicated with all employees. To assist with the implementation, a
"super-user", as described by Michal Wagner, should be designated to answer,
and resolve any queries.
2. Reluctancy to change.
Some
reasons for this include the fear of failure, of the unknown, losing authority
within the company, lack of information and prior bad experiences. It is vital
that businesses acknowledge employees concerns to the new systems and help each
individual to feel more comfortable about the decision being made. The business
must ensure open communication with the team and make aware of the benefits to
be achieved.
Information System Failure:
Nike
George Lawton discusses the system failure of Nike. Back in 2000, Nike spent a $400 million upgrade on its ERP system. This later led to $100 million worth of losses and, when it couldn’t refill orders, a 20% drop in the stock price. Its important businesses set realistic goals in the implementation plan, such as functionality and project schedules.
